On June 17th, 2013 I didn’t start a journey to lose weight, I started a journey to completely change my life. I was at a job I hated, I lived in a place that we wanted to leave every day, and I weighed 370 pounds.
What’s sad is that I had lost weight before. Six years ago I was the best man at my brother’s wedding. I couldn’t fit in a tuxedo during the fitting, and when the pictures were posted, I saw how big I had gotten.
After his wedding, I took weight loss to the extreme. I ate 1,200 calories a day and exercised four hours a day. I lost 132 pounds in six months but didn’t learn what it meant to be healthy.
I gained all the weight back plus 38 pounds. This is where I found myself on June 15th, 2013. Again I was a best man, but this time at my best friends wedding.
After his wedding, I focused on what it meant to live a healthy lifestyle. In this life-changing journey, I lost 170 pounds in one year, I quit a job I hated, and our family moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to our dream designation of Maui, Hawaii. The only way I was able to change my life was when I stopped believing these four little lies.
1. You can start tomorrow
One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves is that there will always be more time. Here’s the thing, life is short, and no one is guaranteed a tomorrow. None of us know when our time on this earth will be done, yet sometimes we live like we’re immortal.
Tomorrow isn’t the day to start because there might not be a tomorrow. Start today, start right now, start right after you get done reading this. When I stopped believing the lie that I could start tomorrow, I did what needed to be done.
2. You just have to diet and exercise
Losing weight, and being healthy go far beyond dieting and exercise, to have continued success, you have to focus on living a healthy lifestyle. It’s too easy to cheat on your diet or to miss a day of exercise. When you make this your lifestyle, you don’t make the same bad decisions you made before because that’s not what you want for your new lifestyle. You wake up each day and make the choices that benefit your new lifestyle.
3. You can do this on your own
Every now and then we all need a shoulder to cry on when things don’t go as planned. When you try to lose weight or live healthy on your own, it’s too easy to make excuses. If you want to have success at making big changes, reach out for support. Tell a family member, or a close friend about your plans, and ask them to keep you accountable. Just be sure to stay away from negative people.
4. Your goals are impossible
The biggest lie we tell ourselves is that our dreams aren’t possible. It’s not easy to lose weight, or make a lifestyle change, or achieve huge goals, but it definitely is possible.
It may take more time thank you think it should, but if you take action, and persevere through all the bums in the road, your big goals are possible. It took three years to get here, but I can tell you it was worth the struggle.
These are four little lies, but chances are you are telling yourself more than these. If you are going to succeed, you must stop believing these lies. Don’t miss understand me, this isn’t going to be easy.
There are going to be many obstacles, there are going to be times when you fail. The people that are successful in life have figured out how to bounce back quickly from failure.
Take this journey one day at a time. Instead of focusing on that big goal, just focus on what you have to do that day. When you focus on each day, after a while you’ll look up, and see real progress.
Stop telling yourself lies and choose to live the kind of life you truly deserve.
What lies have you told yourself that have kept you from being healthy?
