10 Steps to Prevent Prostate CancerEdited By: Stephanie Dawson
• Eat G-BOMBS
G-BOMBS are green beans, onions, mushrooms, and seeds. These foods have powerful anti-cancer effects. Cruciferous vegetables like kale, broccoli, and cabbage contain phytochemicals that detoxify carcinogens and reduce the risk of prostate cancer. The onion family has anti-cancer effects and helps reduce risk.
• Exercise
In a study, men who engaged in vigorous physical activity for at least 3 hours a week had 61% less risk of dying from prostate cancer. Exercise, especially endurance style like running, swimming, and cycling not only prevent prostate cancer but also slow the rate of its progression.
• Avoid dairy
A study that was conducted on people in 41 countries of showed a positive relationship between milk consumption and death by prostate cancer. Other dairy products such as cheese and yogurt may also add risk.
• Reduce consumption of animal protein
Over consumption of animal protein leads to higher risk of prostate cancer. Consuming large quantities of meat, poultry, and fish increases blood levels of IGF 1 which is positively related to prostate cancer. For good prostate health avoid more than 2-4 servings of animal protein per week.
• Avoid supplemental folic acid
Folic acid may be responsible for increasing the risk of cancer. Most multi-vitamins contain a synthetic form of folate, one of the B vitamins, which is directly proportional to risk of prostate cancer. Folate in food actually reduces risk.
• Have sex more often
Several studies have suggested that having sex more often reduces the risk of prostate cancer. Ejaculation clears the prostate of carcinogens which reduces the risk of prostate cancer. More than 12 ejaculations per month are required to nullify the risk.
• Visit the spice rack more often
Researchers at the centre for Holistic Urology at Columbia suggest that a mix of herbs like oregano, ginger, and rosemary can reduce the growth of prostate cancer cells by more than 78%. Green tea also has anti-cancer properties.
• Wine and dine
A recent study at the National Cancer Institute proved that men who consumed more than 10 grams of garlic daily were 50% less prone to the risk of prostate cancer than those who did not. Red wine contains resveratrol, an antioxidant which helps inhibit the growth of prostate cancer.
• Don’t dry clean
Most dry cleaners use percs, a substance that can cause damage to kidneys. Over time it can lead to cancer. If you have clothes that need dry cleaning, air them before wearing or search for a cleaner that doesn’t use the solvent.
• Eat more cereal
Eating cereal in the morning is a healthy habit. Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, add almond or soy milk and reduce your risk of prostate cancer.
